Private Residence
Hawaii County, Hawaii

This house is designed for a spectacular site on the Big Island of Hawaii. Located in a gently sloping meadow overlooking the ocean, the design was conceived as a series of pavilions stepping down towards the water. The structure's low profile hugs the landscape and firmly attaches the structure to the ground. Massive concrete piers support the conical roof shapes and allow the glass sidewalls to open to views and ocean breezes. Connecting the pavilions on the landward side is a courtyard sheltered by a massive stone wall. The courtyard is enlivened by a water feature, and is lushly planted with tropical vegetation.

The house is approximately 5,200 square feet, and includes a dramatic vaulted great room, a spacious gourmet kitchen and recreation room. The house includes separate sleeping areas for parents and children and a semi-detached guest suite across the courtyard. Extensive use of native materials in interior finishes ties the house to its surroundings.
