This project updated the existing kitchen of a 1920's Cape-style home and converted it into a space for casual dining and entertaining. Inspiration for the island, which forms the centerpiece of the new space and which guided the entire design, came from a large circular table the owners once had in the kitchen. The circular portion of the island and the adjoining bar are slightly raised above the cooking area to disguise the clutter caused by cooking and to provide a separation between the kitchen and the living space. A home office fills the wall and bay window opposite the kitchen utilizes moveable carts which allow for flexible storage and extension of workspaces. The adjacent floor to ceiling cabinetry hides the clutter of daily life from the view of guest. The kitchen, finished with natural materials throughout - from the tumbled marble used on the countertops to the unique canary wood used for the bar, exudes a warmth and comfort that will only improve with age. |
